New Mexico’s anti-gunners treated the new year like a fresh opportunity to infringe on Second Amendment rights, and they did not waste a moment in racing toward that goal.
The state Senate last week approved a sweeping gun control package designed to undercut freedoms enjoyed by all upstanding citizens of the state.

Lawmakers’ wishlist included a ban on common gas-operated semi-automatic weapons and magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. It further targeted small mom-and-pop gun shops that are the lifeblood of the firearm industry with burdensome requirements that could drive many into the ground.
Needless to say, gun rights advocates immediately sounded the alarm over this ominous proposal.
Second Amendment advocates are gearing up for a protracted battle in New Mexico
The National Rifle Association (NRA) blasted the push as one that “would severely undermine the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding New Mexicans and threaten the viability of local firearm retailers.”
That sentiment was echoed by Andrew Gottlieb, Managing Director for the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA).
“Senate Bill 17, which was passed by state Senate Democrats over the weekend, would ban semi-automatic firearms and original capacity magazines,” Gottlieb noted. “But it’s not going to prevent criminals from committing crimes.”
He added that such an action only provides a “false impression” that leaders are serious about addressing violent crime.
Clearly, they are not.
Instead, they roll out the same tired playbook that anti-gunners have used for years. Ignore the criminals, especially revolving-door judges, while assigning sweeping blame to inanimate objects protected by the Bill of Rights.
All this political posturing will accomplish nothing if gun rights supporters in the New Mexico House are successful at heading off this effort. If not, then it’s the lawyers’ turn.
