In a legislative session during which Virginia’s Second Amendment opponents waged all-out war on gun rights, any victory is worth celebrating.
Now comes word that the proposed $500 suppressor tax was yanked from consideration this week. Anti-2A lawmakers intended to impose the charge on law-abiding citizens to replace the now-defunct $200 National Firearms Act (NFA) tax.
2A supporters testified that suppressors prevent hearing loss and noise pollution
American Suppressor Association (ASA) President Knox Williams announced the win on social media. “Virginia House Bill 207—the bill imposing an egregious $500 tax on suppressors—has been unanimously tabled!”
Williams provided testimony to a House finance subcommittee on the importance of hearing protection for the sporting public. Gun Owners of America (GOA) also gave valuable background and data that apparently swayed the committee.
The group explained to members how in-state dealers would carry the tax burden, which would place them at a competitive disadvantage. After all, getting around the charge simply by shopping elsewhere would be the primary result.
Suppressors are seldom used in criminal acts
Organization representatives noted the rare occurrence of a suppressor being used to commit a violent crime. Instead, they are utilized for hearing protection and to reduce noise pollution.
GOA Director of State Affairs Chris Stone blasted the now-defeated proposal as more of the same from the anti-Second Amendment lobby.
“This backdoor gun control scheme was a loud insult to law-abiding Virginians, and grassroots activists made sure legislators heard them loud and clear,” Stone declared. “HB 207 has been tabled for the 2026 session, but make no mistake, the anti-gun lobby is not backing down. Neither are we.”
With gun rights opponents now solidly in control of the Virginia state government, expect more of these pitched battles over the freedom to keep and bear arms.
