An anti-Second Amendment Oregon lawmaker is under investigation over allegations that he intimidated a party colleague into changing her vote on a key gun control issue.
The change would make it more expensive for law-abiding citizens to own a firearm legally—of course.
2A opponents in Oregon seek to oppress gun rights even more
State Rep. Jason Kropf (D) chairs the House Judiciary Committee, which held a vote during a work session last week on HB 4145. This measure would alter the state’s contentious “permit-to-purchase” and “large capacity” magazine prohibition that squeaked by voters in 2022.
The bill proposes raising the permit fee to $150 and allowing officials up to two months to decide whether a citizen may exercise their Second Amendment rights. The original proposal is already being challenged in court, and changes would not take effect until 2028.
That does not in any way excuse what Kropf is accused of.
Committee chair accused of bullying colleague to change her key vote
According to gun rights advocate Derek LeBlanc, who filed a complaint with the Legislative Equity Office, Rep. Thuy Tran (D) initially voted against the gun control measure. This apparently did not sit well with Kropf, as the bill would have died in committee.
The chairman is seen on video reacting to Tran’s no vote, pausing proceedings to step out of the room with his colleague, and nearly 20 minutes passed before the meeting was reconvened.
Tran appeared confused and asked whether the group hadn’t already voted on it. Kropf said he requested the recall of the vote, and then Tran switched her vote to yes, advancing the bill before a Monday deadline.
In an interview with The Oregonian, Tran said she respected Kropf before blasting him for his actions. She declared that the chair “created a hostile working environment to me, staff, advocates, and the public” during the proceedings.
