Imagine the fear and uncertainty when confronted by a police officer—only to realize that the person representing law enforcement is actually a violent criminal seeking entry to your home.
Now imagine being unarmed in this scenario.
Fortunately for an unidentified Atlanta resident, he was armed and had enough situational awareness to realize he was not dealing with the city’s finest.
Suspect allegedly pretended to be a cop to get into the apartment
It was Friday evening just before 10:30 when a man later identified as 22-year-old Jaron Jordan allegedly went to an apartment door and announced himself as a police officer.
When this did not result in immediate entry, he is accused of attempting to kick in the door several times. And while this is not advisable in many situations, the intended victim fired several shots through the front door to defend himself.
Jordan was struck by multiple rounds, but responding officers found him “alert, conscious, and breathing,” according to local media. There is no word on whether the alleged target knew the suspect or if it was a random attack.
Resident now must see if he faces charges for defending himself
Jordan was transported to an Atlanta hospital and then charged with impersonating a police officer, criminal trespass with damage to property, loitering, and prowling. This is no word of any charges against the resident who apparently defended himself, and there would have to be considerable new evidence to put him in legal trouble.
Certainly more details would create a clearer picture, and firing through a closed door is a tricky proposition. But without a firearm, the apartment dweller could very well have been just another crime statistic and a warning to be prepared to defend yourself at all times.
Georgia leans heavily toward self-defense rights, which is good news for the shooter and others in his dangerous position.
