Gun Rights Opponents Throw Fit Over New Mexico Gun Control Defeat

No matter where you stand on any prominent issue, there are likely to be victories to celebrate and defeats to ponder. But for something as clear-cut as the Second Amendment’s protection of the right to keep and bear arms, anti-gunners are regularly shocked when they do not get their way.

And even when it is obvious that rabid anti-2A forces overplayed their hand, these organizations throw predictable temper tantrums over their legislative failures.

Take New Mexico as the most recent example.

Even supporters warned that the New Mexico bill would go down in flames

Gun control advocates pushed hard for a sweeping ban on so-called “assault weapons,” but some on the fence got cold feet when it was time to vote on the issue.

Why? Because they knew that the recent proposal was impossibly overbroad and ripe for a massive judicial defeat.

Senate Bill 17, which cleared the New Mexico House before running out of steam in the Senate, was exposed as a questionable measure by the very same cabal that pushed for its passage.

New Mexico proposal would ban modern sporting rifles

Camille Ward (D) is a spokesperson for her party and a supporter of even more oppressive gun restrictions. She told The New Mexican that her political colleagues were mistaken to support the measure as it would ultimately lead to a catastrophic judicial outcome for anti-Second Amendment forces.

“By passing a ban this broad, we are handing the U.S. Supreme Court a perfect opportunity to deliver a definitive, nationwide ruling against state-level firearm restrictions,” Ward declared. “Beyond the legal risk, the bill’s immediate effect will likely be a surge in panic buying of the exact weapons this bill is trying to limit.”

She noted that many on the gun control side of the aisle warned that the legislation was doomed from the start. Anti-2A activist Miranda Viscoli asserted, according to Ward, that the bill “was legally vulnerable and had potential to backfire.”

The spokesperson went further, crediting her colleagues with “all the major commonsense gun safety legislation that has crossed the finish line since 2019, from safe storage laws that protect our kids to straw purchase prevention, universal background checks, and red flag laws to keep guns from falling into dangerous hands.”

And even she realized that SB 17 was a colossal overreach and doomed to fail.

So, the handwriting was already on the wall.

Unfortunately, that did not in any way impede shrill voices opposed to gun rights from expressing their disappointment. Nothing less than the total ban on popular sporting rifles would suffice, and their frustration with the loss was evident.

A joint statement from New Mexico Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action blasted the lower chamber for standing firm against their agenda.

“House lawmakers failed at their most fundamental duty: protecting the lives of kids like me desperate to grow up without the fear of gunfire ringing out at any moment,” a student leader wrote. “If the House thinks we’ll go away because the session is over, they’ve grossly underestimated our fury.”

The handwringing continued with Cheryl Haase of Moms Demand Action.

“Our state has the third-highest gun death rate in our country, and House lawmakers responded by abdicating any responsibility to address the gun trafficking supply chain that is fueling gun violence, and they failed to get assault weapons off our streets,” Haase claimed in a statement that trotted out familiar gun control tropes.

Distress calls from anti-gunners were more than offset by the reaction of the National Rifle Association (NRA).

The group posted on X that it was time to celebrate “a big win for gun owners in New Mexico. Senate Bill 17 is DEAD…Thank you to every NRA member who called their legislators and fought back. When we stand up, we win.”

Amen.

There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.
