The Second Amendment protects a wide range of human rights, such as the right to defend loved ones and property against violent criminals. Then there’s the very real freedom to put food on the table and pass down sporting traditions to future generations.
If an alarming Oregon initiative succeeds, it will bring a radical and oppressive regime to a state that already attacks gun rights at every turn.
This week, the National Rifle Association (NRA) warned that the citizen initiative is at best a misguided but dangerous proposal.
Alarming proposal will appeal to gun rights opponents
Initiative Petition 28 (IP28) has the seductive and misleading title of The PEACE Act (People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions).
If enacted, it would, in its own words, “extend protections that keep our companion animals safe to animals currently on farms, in research labs, and in the wild—which would then protect these animals from slaughter, hunting, fishing, and experimentation.”
No hunting, fishing, or trapping, even to feed one’s family. Violators would be subject to charges, including misdemeanors and even a Class C felony, with a potential five-year prison sentence.

One advocacy group, the Sportsmen’s Alliance, explained the dilemma of a state with fine sporting traditions but dominated by urban voters who have no understanding of its heritage.
“Urbanization has created epicenters of ignorance when it comes to wildlife management,” the group declared. “These high population areas control the political discourse and application of policy in nearly every state, which has left the rural lifestyle and sportsmen’s heritage on the outside looking in. Disconnected from wildlife and the ramifications of bad policy, urban voters are susceptible to the emotional rhetoric and falsehoods of the animal rights movement.”
And that, in a nutshell, is the issue facing Oregon’s sporting community.
