While some states continue to launch attacks on fundamental Second Amendment rights, Alabama is a leader in defending the ability to keep and bear arms.
That includes the right to purchase weapons, and state residents may soon enjoy a bonus thanks to their Montgomery lawmakers. The House last week overwhelmingly advanced legislation to establish a Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday.
Prospects for Alabama’s first-ever 2A sales tax holiday are encouraging
Alabama’s statewide sales tax is 4%, though some locales hike that as high as 12%. Especially when purchasing higher-end items, this can push the overall cost out of reach for many.
The 74-27 vote moved HB 360 on to the state Senate, where gun rights supporters vastly outnumber the opposition.
If it passes there, the sales tax holiday will reach Gov. Kay Ivey’s (R) desk, and she is a Second Amendment stalwart who recently championed Constitutional Carry for her constituents.

During that successful 2022 push, Ivey affirmed her pro-gun stance to reporters. “Unlike states who are doing everything in their power to make it harder for law-abiding citizens, Alabama is reaffirming our commitment to defending our Second Amendment rights.”
If HB 360 becomes law, the sales tax holiday would debut on the last weekend of August. Of course, this is leading into hunting season and the annual gift-giving period, so the possible savings for the 2A community are considerable.
It should also be a boon for firearm retailers across the state.
The right combination of sale prices and marketing could make the weekend—if the proposal becomes law—an annual event that draws the sporting public and generates profits for small gun retailers.
Approval would align Alabama with Mississippi in more than geography. Florida is the national leader, as it now features a sales tax-free period that runs from early September through the end of the year.
