Not every defensive gun use involves an Old West shootout and carnage in the streets. Many times, the mere presence of a ready firearm is an enormous assistance to the intended victim and an absolute deterrent to the perpetrator.
David and Mary Hubert are an elderly Georgia couple who encountered the unthinkable Monday night. They survived, thanks to their wits and a welcome assist from “Sweet Jane.”
Suspect found an unlocked door and allegedly went inside
Police investigators believe 36-year-old Ramon Darden entered the lower level of the home through an unlocked garage door at around 7 p.m. The husband and wife were busy enjoying movies on different floors of the residence when he allegedly appeared.
The suspect encountered David, who told him to leave. That only resulted in cursing and erratic behavior, so the husband retreated to another room, locked the door, and called 911.
Meanwhile, Mary heard the commotion from upstairs and grabbed her .38 caliber pistol, which she refers to as “Sweet Jane,” from under the pillow. She assumed a defensive position and kept watch on the floor through the bathroom mirrors.
Many defensive gun uses do not involve a trigger pull
David told investigators that as he waited for law enforcement and listened to the suspect rummage through the house, he was not worried that the man would harm his wife. “I know she’s capable of defending herself. They had better hope they get me and not Mary.”
Of course, David Hubert also knew that Mary had an advantage over the luckless intruder. A ready firearm goes far in evening the odds, even when an alleged violent criminal confronts senior citizens.
When police arrived, they found the suspect still in the home. He was taken into custody and charged with burglary and criminal trespass.
No injuries were reported to the couple, and no shots were fired.
Still, the calming and potentially life-saving effect of the firearm for the Atlanta couple cannot be overstated, and they are certainly grateful today for the Second Amendment and Sweet Jane.
