Minnesota’s increasingly anti-Second Amendment political leadership stoked controversy yet again on Wednesday when they introduced a volatile new measure.
SF 4290 is the latest attempt to prohibit nearly all semi-automatic firearms along with magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. Incredibly, state officials would have free rein to enter private homes to check if firearms are stored in compliance with the proposed bill.
Part of proposal would create a de facto firearm registry
The proposal, which would take effect on August 1, would ban citizens from owning, transferring, or possessing “semiautomatic military-style assault weapons” and most standard capacity magazines.
Equally disturbing is the provision that requires a formal request for the government to “grandfather” current owners of these popular weapons. The individual would receive a “certificate of ownership” granted by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
Then, of course, the government will know exactly who has these ubiquitous firearms in their homes.
Gun owners face having state officials inspect their homes
For those who choose not to crawl to the Minnesota government to exercise their constitutional rights, there are three options.
Gun owners may surrender the weapons to authorities for destruction, modify (or destroy) the firearm so that it is no longer functional, or take the gun out of state entirely.
And this is far from the only oppressive measure Minnesota’s shooting community faces from this legislative session.
Lawmakers are considering measures this week to allow local governments to ban firearms in buildings they own or lease, a repeal of the state’s preemption law protecting gun rights, a ban on having weapons in vehicles in school parking lots and pickup lines, a prohibition of hobbyists producing firearms at home, and a scheme to reveal concealed carry permit data to the public.
If any of these bills clear the legislature and are signed by the governor, expect an onslaught of lawsuits against Minnesota’s gun control regime.
