Even as anti-Second Amendment city leaders in Pennsylvania attempt to undermine gun rights for local citizens, state officials pushed to support the state’s existing preemption law and defend the freedom to keep and bear arms.
Unfortunately, Senate Bill 822 now languishes in committee and needs a legislative shove to advance. Gun Owners of America (GOA) recently sent out an alert to its members, urging them to contact Senate Local Government Committee Chairwoman Dawn Keefer (R) and ask that she push the bill through.

“Rogue municipalities like Philadelphia continue to violate this law without any repercussion or accountability, due to the lack of teeth in the law,” GOA warned. “Meanwhile, they have unlimited resources of Bloomberg front organizations to defend them in court. If law-abiding gun owners are ever going to turn the tide, we need the tools laid out in SB 822.”
Local restrictions on constitutional rights are misguided at best, and the only people affected are those who obey the law.
SB 822 is an effort to level the playing field between the people and leaders who would strip their gun rights away.
Gun owners could defend themselves from misguided gun control measures
The measure would provide recourse for gun owners who believe they were wronged to sue for damages, attorney fees, and expenses if a court deems a local firearm restriction violates the state’s preemption law.
This is exactly what GOA warned of. Anti-gun local lawmakers funded by unaccountable billionaires are attempting to rewrite the Second Amendment for their constituents, and not in favor of individual rights.
But Pennsylvania’s preemption law, if properly strengthened, should turn aside these efforts by urban areas to circumvent the Constitution. Gun owners would have a powerful weapon to protect themselves from arbitrary government infringements.
