Florida’s push to have more armed protectors on college campuses is a giant step closer to reality after the state House overwhelmingly approved HB 757 last week. The Senate previously gave its thumbs up to the measure.
The margin was 88-20 to allow faculty and staff at higher education institutions to volunteer as the first line of defense. This, of course, follows a spate of recent attacks on campuses, which are often off-limits for carrying legal weapons.
The Guardian program, which already protects public school districts in Florida, may soon be expanded to universities and colleges. A prominent Second Amendment advocate explained the logic behind this proposal.
The ‘gun-free’ campus protocol is obviously not working
Alan Gottlieb is the chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. In a press release, he noted that the “gun-free” concept applied to campuses is an abject failure.
“It’s time to think out of that restrictive box and try a different approach, which is to allow volunteers to train and fight back,” Gottlieb declared. “For years, we’ve watched the handwringing and head-shaking over attacks on college campuses, with the typical reaction from the gun prohibition lobby and anti-gun lawmakers to call for more restrictions on private gun ownership.”
Critics charge campuses will be ‘flooded’ with weapons
Of course, this point was completely lost on the anti-gun outfit Everytown for Gun Safety, which could not conceive of the benefit of having law-abiding citizens protecting themselves.
Everytown blasted the proposal as “a dangerous bill that would flood college campuses with firearms.” Tom Hixon, a member of the group’s advisory council, considers the action irresponsible.
“By forcing more guns onto campuses without accounting for the additional psychological, physical, and financial burdens this program entails, Florida lawmakers are shifting the state’s responsibility for safety onto the shoulders of educators and students, opening up the very real possibility of further endangering themselves and law enforcement,” Hixon claimed.
There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.
