Little is more chilling than the prospect of confronting a violent criminal in your own home in the middle of the night. For all the talk of hunting and sport shooting, and these are fundamental American traditions, the primary benefit of the Second Amendment is in that early morning event.
A North Charlotte couple is grateful today after a frightening encounter in their home earlier this month. The unmistakable sound of loud banging awakened them as someone forced their way inside.
Resident had a ready firearm and the will to defend his home
The homeowner told local media that the only explanation for the sudden racket was that “someone was breaking into our house.” The immediate assumption must be that the intruder is aware that someone is likely at home at that hour and prepared to use force.
The unidentified resident was also prepared.
“I didn’t have any hesitation. As soon as I knew someone was coming in, I just let it fire, you know?” he explained. “I just let it go…You don’t know what their intentions are. You don’t know anything. All you can do at that moment is protect yourself.”
Couple responded quickly when confronted by stranger
His partner expressed her gratitude for his quick action to end the threat. “I heard his gun cock back, and he told me to get on the floor. I don’t hesitate. I just got on the floor.”
Multiple gunshots apparently convinced the suspect that it was time to reconsider his options. Investigators did not determine if the alleged intruder was struck, though the front door was boarded up afterward due to bullet damage.
Fortunately for the brave defender, North Carolina protects its residents with the Castle Doctrine.
Citizens are under no obligation to turn and run inside their own home when confronted by a violent criminal. Under most circumstances, law-abiding residents have civil and criminal immunity when they protect themselves and their loved ones in the Tar Heel State.
