Reasonable people can and do disagree, and the ability to have differences of opinion and not resort to violence or hateful rhetoric is one of the underpinnings of a civilized society.
When Minnesota’s proposed “assault weapon” ban went down in flames, some in the anti-gun lobby reacted with disgusting words that have no place in our government. Rep. Aisha Gomez (DFL) reacted to the defeat by telling one of those leading the opposition, Rep. Elliot Engen (R), to “go (expletive) shoot himself.”
Minnesota lawmakers responded forcefully to inexcusable statement after gun bill vote
House Speaker Lisa Demuth (R) and Senate Leader Harry Niska (R) released a joint statement condemning the reported outburst as inappropriate for the state government.
Demuth called such actions “unacceptable” and said, “It makes every person in this place less safe.” She added that Gomez’s words made her unfit for a leadership role in the lower chamber.
Niska echoed this sentiment while referencing recent violent acts in the state. “After the horrible tragedies we’ve had in Minnesota over the last year, it is sickening that an elected official would think it’s acceptable to say the things we heard tonight…To respond to that with threats and hate is unconscionable and unacceptable.”
2A opponents held a ‘sit-in’ after failing to advance gun control bill
Engen’s party colleagues want Gomez removed from her prominent position as Chair of the House Taxes Committee. She predictably backtracked and claimed she had said something else to her colleague, though witnesses have a very different account.
She and some of her supporters held a “sit-in” after the procedural vote against yet more gun control. There is no word on whether songs were sung or tambourines were played, but it would not be surprising.
After all, political theater is the specialty of radical Second Amendment opponents.
There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.
Defend America is more than a name, it’s a stand for freedom, resilience, and the values this country was built on. Every tee, hat, and mug is a symbol of unapologetic pride. Wear it loud, wear it proud, and let the world know: freedom isn’t negotiable.
