It almost wasn’t fair for the suspect.
Imagine casing a residence with intentions of breaking in and stealing someone else’s property or much, much worse. Now consider that the homeowner has a security system in place and, even just before midnight, he is immediately alerted to your presence.
And he has a ready firearm. For an alleged burglar in Tulsa, Oklahoma, late Sunday night, that’s the unfortunate hand he played.
Alert homeowner confronted suspect after he came in through the back door
The defender watched as the suspect peered through windows before gaining entry through a back door. The armed homeowner went downstairs to confront the alleged intruder, who then allegedly became aggressive toward the man.
That was almost a life-ending mistake.
Investigators reported that the resident defended himself by firing a single shot that struck the suspect. In the process of trying to get away as fast as he could, the unwelcome visitor conveniently dropped his wallet to help authorities track him down.
Even after being shot, alleged intruder had to be forcefully subdued
Officers quickly set up a perimeter in the neighborhood, and the unidentified suspect was located. There was not a peaceful end, however, as the wounded man reportedly resisted and even bit an officer.
Tulsa Police Department Lt. J.T. Snoddy told reporters that the man his officers arrested likely consumed some kind of mind-altering drug.
“He definitely appears to be under the influence of some sort of substance,” Snoddy said. “None of the force applications seemed to bother him at all.”
Now, consider the situation late Sunday if the homeowner did not have a ready weapon. He was aware of the intruder, but the only recourse left was to either flee or call emergency services and hope they arrived in time.
There are many better responses than either of those, and the resident chose correctly.
