An Ohio woman early Wednesday morning reportedly shot her ex-boyfriend to death as he allegedly attempted to break into her Harrison Township home.
Her three children were likely sleeping when the chaos exploded. They and their mother survived the home invasion attempt, and the mother’s licensed handgun and courage to wield it to protect her young family are the reasons.
Officials described the horrifying events.
Investigators found indications of earlier violence before deadly shooting
“At 2:14 a.m., the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a 33-year-old female reporting that her ex-boyfriend was attempting to force his way into her residence,” the official statement revealed. “While deputies were responding, the caller advised dispatchers that the male was kicking in the front door before stating he had begun breaking a window.”
The terrifying situation suddenly stopped.
“Moments later, the caller can be heard yelling at the male, followed by what investigators believe to be a muffled gunshot. The caller then told dispatch she had shot her ex-boyfriend and was fleeing the residence with her three children.”
State law protects crime victims from being doubly victimized
The young family escaped injury, and investigators discovered indications of a violent encounter with the ex earlier in the evening. They also noted that the woman who defended her family “has no prior criminal history.”
Authorities found a front window screen removed, broken glass around the front door, and the handgun and a spent shell casing from her heroic reaction to apparent domestic violence.
The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office later identified the deceased ex-boyfriend as 34-year-old James Cameron.
The mother’s identity is being withheld due to Ohio state law protecting those who rise in defense of themselves and their loved ones. Marsy’s Law, which has been enacted in multiple states, guarantees crime victims’ right not to be further victimized by the legal process.
