Everyday activities such as using an ATM or pumping gas may expose a person to danger, but if that individual is armed, the situation can instantly flip.
That’s apparently the scenario that unfolded in the Chicago suburb of Orland Park on Tuesday morning. Police believe that an unidentified suspect approached a man who was filling his car, brandished a firearm, and attempted to rob him.
Criminals count on compliant victims
That backfired quickly when the intended victim drew his lawful weapon from his waistband and fired. The suspect went down immediately, then got back up and scrambled away. The escape attempt by the wounded man was to no avail, and responding officers located him and took him to a hospital for treatment.
His condition is unknown, and he likely faces a laundry list of criminal charges.
The gas station manager told reporters he thought the intended victim should have complied with the suspect’s demands instead of fighting back. “I would hope that he would give up his keys, let him take his car, and the guy wouldn’t have to use his weapon. But luckily he had a weapon on him and wasn’t afraid to take it out.”
Some would rather that intended victims cooperate with their attacker
This is certainly one approach: to simply hand over the keys and hope for the best. Of course, there’s no assurance that the attacker will not fire anyway.
Still, some people approach threatening situations in this fashion, and it’s their right. But many Americans choose not to be victimized when the Second Amendment guarantees their ability to resort to armed self-defense.
The business owner’s son had a markedly different perspective.
“The guy had a gun on him, which happened to be really convenient for him,” the son told local media. “I’m hoping nobody comes across this situation, but just in case this ever happens, they’re able to defend themselves. So it’s really nice, really important to see that guy defend himself in the way that everybody should be able to.”
Amen.
There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.
Defend America is more than a name, it’s a stand for freedom, resilience, and the values this country was built on. Every tee, hat, and mug is a symbol of unapologetic pride. Wear it loud, wear it proud, and let the world know: freedom isn’t negotiable.
