Advocacy Group Warns of Effort to Entrap Law-Abiding Gun Owners as Oregon lawmakers push forward with a controversial piece of legislation, Senate Bill 243. The measure, which has already cleared the state Senate, is being condemned by the Oregon Firearms Federation (OFF) and other Second Amendment advocates as a direct threat to responsible gun owners across the state.
SB 243 targets forced reset triggers (FRTs)—a popular firearm accessory designed to increase the speed of semi-automatic fire without converting weapons into fully automatic firearms. These devices are legal under federal law for now and are commonly used by sport shooters and gun enthusiasts. Under the proposed Oregon law, however, owning an FRT would become a criminal offense. There would be no grandfathering clause for current owners, and no legal path to transfer the accessory out of state.
According to OFF, the bill is nothing short of a trap. “It’s nonsense,” the organization wrote in a statement. “This law doesn’t target criminals. It targets the very people who follow the law and exercise their Second Amendment rights responsibly.”
Critics argue that SB 243 does nothing to address violent crime or increase public safety. Instead, it criminalizes law-abiding citizens overnight, stripping them of their rights and options for legal compliance. In the absence of any clear enforcement path or exemption for current FRT owners, the bill may be setting up thousands of Oregonians for entrapment.
Expansion of ‘Gun-Free’ Zones Raises Additional Concerns
In addition to the FRT ban, Advocacy Group Warns of Effort to Entrap Law-Abiding Gun Owners because SB 243 proposes an aggressive expansion of “gun-free” zones—areas where even concealed handgun license (CHL) holders would be barred from carrying firearms. These zones would grow far beyond current restrictions, despite strong evidence that such zones do not deter crime and may in fact embolden those intent on doing harm.
The logic behind expanding gun-free zones has been repeatedly challenged by self-defense advocates. Criminals, by definition, do not follow laws. Disarming lawful citizens in more locations does nothing to improve public safety and leaves them more vulnerable in high-risk environments. The OFF and others argue that these expanded zones will turn more places into soft targets, endangering rather than protecting the public.
Some lawmakers claim that SB 243 is intended to prevent suicides—a goal that is important but seemingly unrelated to forced reset triggers or concealed carry rights. “Exactly how will banning FRTs accomplish this?” OFF asked. “Or greater restrictions on where people may freely exercise their constitutional right to armed self-defense?”
The answer, according to OFF and many others in the gun rights community, is simple: it won’t. SB 243 appears to be more about optics than effective policy. It allows anti-gun legislators to claim they are addressing gun violence while, in reality, punishing citizens who have done nothing wrong.
Another Battle in the Ongoing War Against the Second Amendment
That Advocacy Group Warns of Effort to Entrap Law-Abiding Gun Owners is part of a larger and growing concern among gun rights advocates. As states like Oregon continue to push restrictive laws, questions are raised about how far lawmakers are willing to go to chip away at Second Amendment protections.
SB 243 is not about stopping criminals—it’s about controlling citizens. It’s a bill that does not offer solutions but creates new problems, turning responsible gun owners into potential felons. The lack of exemptions, the vague enforcement mechanism, and the sweeping nature of its “gun-free” zone provisions all contribute to what OFF calls an intentional attempt to trap law-abiding citizens in legal jeopardy.
If passed, SB 243 could become a dangerous model for similar laws in other anti-gun states. The hope among gun rights organizations is that enough public pressure will stop the bill before it reaches the governor’s desk. Until then, advocacy groups like OFF are urging Oregonians to contact their legislators and defend their constitutional rights before more damage is done.
