As the Department of Justice (DOJ) launches the Second Amendment Rights Division, its leader reaffirmed her position that gun rights are not lesser freedoms that may be whittled down to nothing.
Attorney General Pam Bondi on Friday posted a powerful declaration on X to address any doubt about her stance on the hard-won freedom to keep and bear arms.
DOJ officials are no longer openly hostile to the Second Amendment
“The 2nd Amendment is not a second-class right,” Bondi wrote. “After the prior administration’s campaign to infringe on Americans’ gun rights, the Justice Department is strongly committed to undoing the damage—including just last week filing our first ever Supreme Court brief arguing for public carry.”
Bondi added that the new Civil Rights Division will further the administration’s “pro-2nd Amendment agenda and protect the right to bear arms for all.”
Much remains to be accomplished, but progress should be celebrated
Any reasonable observer agrees that the environment for gun rights in the previous administration’s DOJ was hostile, to say the least. There were concerted efforts to revoke valuable FFLs for even minor paperwork errors and to bring the full force of the federal government down on the industry.
Think back to the now-defunct White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Staffed by rabid anti-gunners, its sole mission was to discredit the Second Amendment while opening offices with the same mission in all 50 states.
Only, something funny happened on the way to eradicating fundamental rights.
The new DOJ office has a distinctly different mission.
Its purpose begins with protecting the right to keep and bear arms. This is not a troublesome relic of the past that must be managed but rather a basic liberty that is part of the American fabric.
That followed the scrapping of the hated “zero tolerance” policy held over from the White House’s previous occupant. These actions and Bondi’s declaration send a strong signal that the federal government is no longer adversarial to gun rights.
