An Alabama man last Wednesday was presumably experiencing a rather normal day when he was confronted by what had to be a strange and frightening sight.
The Limestone County man encountered an alleged car burglar at his residence around midnight, but this was no ordinary thief.
The suspect, later identified as Tanner Stewart Phillips of Hartselle, came prepared for a Call of Duty mission. He reportedly was wearing a bulletproof vest and a ski mask, and authorities said he brought a rifle and a pistol.
Heavily armed suspect allegedly pointed rifle at homeowner and chased him inside
Investigators believe Phillips pointed the rifle at the homeowner when he was discovered on the property. The resident retreated inside his home, and he or someone else inside secured a firearm and counterattacked.
Several rounds struck the suspect, and the attack immediately ended. There is no word today on Phillips’ current condition, but no injuries were reported to the homeowner or anyone else present.
The suspect was transported to Decatur-Morgan Hospital, where he was treated for what were described as non-life-threatening wounds. He is charged with Unlawfully Breaking and Entering a Vehicle, First-Degree Robbery, and Burglary in the First Degree.

No bond was immediately set, and Phillips is being held in the Limestone County Jail.
The details of the case are striking, as it is certainly not a common practice for car thieves to wear body armor and carry rifles. Both would be unwieldy for a burglar trying to get in and out of a vehicle rapidly.
Either way, the homeowner was not injured, and the suspect will be held responsible. It’s yet another example of the Second Amendment’s ability to empower good people to be their own first responders and defend themselves against violent criminals.
