Another day, another good guy with a gun defends themselves from a violent criminal. This is an all-too-common refrain in 2023, and it bears testimony to the need to be armed and prepared.

In this most recent instance, a San Diego County homeowner shot and killed an alleged home invader early Thursday morning while on the phone with emergency authorities.

The homeowner called 911 around 5 a.m. to report that an unknown person was allegedly attempting to enter his home. The caller reported that the suspect was in the backyard and appeared to be about to try to break into the residence.

As the conversation continued, at least one gunshot was heard by the emergency responder.

Deputies who arrived at the scene rendered first aid to the wounded suspect. The alleged would-be home invader was transported to a nearby hospital where they were pronounced dead.

A nearby resident told local media that the homeowner appeared rattled by the violent encounter. Authorities reported the defender was the only person at home when the incident occurred, and the identities of the homeowner and the suspect have not been released.

One neighbor, Steve Moore, told reporters that he wondered what the world is coming to. “I mean, you get people trying to break in. We still are in the Wild West, so you just gotta protect your home, and I understand that. And it’s sad but, you know, it should be a lesson or a warning for the people that are trying to break into houses and cars.”

Investigators said they do not know if the suspect knew the homeowner. They are currently gathering evidence from neighborhood surveillance cameras.

The Second Amendment exists for a clear reason, and it is the fundamental right to protect oneself in a violent encounter. Without this liberty, all others may quickly become irrelevant.
