The number of American households in which there is at least one firearm continues to surge; at least one million weapons have been sold every month for the past five years, and good citizens are lining up to undergo firearms training.
That’s the word from Fox News Digital, which spoke to several class participants in these safety courses.
Eric Stieber is attending gun safety training at an Arizona institution. He told the outlet that people are wary of the next unrest and chaos, “and don’t want to be the victim anymore.”
Maryland businessman Kevin Regan told Fox that it is not enough to simply purchase a firearm and consider yourself prepared. “If you buy a piano, you’re not Billy Joel. If you buy a gun, you’re not Wyatt Earp. If you buy a gun, you need to practice.”
Many new gun owners worry that there will be more harm than benefit if they are not adequately instructed on how to react to an emergency. After all, the weapon is only as good as the person wielding it.
There has also been an uptick in women signing up for these courses.
Breaking down the numbers, January marked the 65th month in a row for at least one million firearm sales in the U.S. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) also noted that sales have increased dramatically since 2010 as more Americans reject any stigma associated with owning a gun.
Between 2020 and today, roughly 26.2 million people purchased a firearm for the first time. For perspective, that is more than the population of Florida.
According to the Pew Research Center, approximately four-in-ten U.S. adults report the presence of a firearm in their home. Thirty-two percent own one personally, and that number may be low due to people not being willing to divulge their self-defense preparations.
There has also been a surge in female weapon ownership, with numbers rising to 25% of the population. Pew found that 40% of American adult males own a firearm.
Over 70% of respondents made it clear that self-defense is the overwhelming reason for gun ownership currently.
