It is bad enough that citizens of 11 U.S. states are required to retreat from imminent danger before acting in self-defense. Who wants to be forced to run away when a violent criminal threatens themselves or their loved ones and property?
Now comes word that the anti-Second Amendment organization Giffords stridently opposes the right to defend yourself.
The group posted on X that Stand Your Ground statutes “encourage people to shoot first and ask questions later. It’s a license to kill that makes all of us less safe. These legally sanctioned killings are on the rise and must be stopped.”
Gun rights opponents view armed self-defense as an evil to be eradicated
Giffords referred to a controversial report by The Wall Street Journal noting a rise in defensive gun uses. The outlet claimed that there has been a 59% increase in justifiable homicides in certain states between 2019 and 2024.
The story then veered into speculation, concluding that laws recognizing the fundamental right to armed self-defense are letting people off the hook for murder.
The WSJ wrote, “The six words killers need to stay out of prison: ‘I feared for my life, officer.’”
Innocent victims should be applauded when they defend themselves, not prosecuted
It takes considerable sleight of hand to magically transform an innocent person defending themselves into a felon, but that’s what Giffords and their ilk seek to accomplish. Ordinary citizens in their perfect world would cower in fear and run scared at the slightest hint of danger.
No gun rights supporter wants the Wild West reincarnated, but they also do not want to be victimized by lawmakers who coddle criminals at the expense of the good people.
If Giffords truly cares about reducing gun violence, they will endorse getting repeat offenders off the streets and encouraging the people to take up arms and defend themselves.
But that’s not likely.
There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.
