California’s Newest Gun Control Push Targets Glock Pistols
California legislators recently reached into their bag of anti-Second Amendment tricks with a new proposal. If the bill became law, the good citizens of the Golden State could no longer purchase Glock handguns.
Why? An action already banned by federal law involves so-called “Glock switches” that make weapons fully automatic.
The plastic devices are mass produced in China and shipped to the U.S. for criminals to modify their Glock pistols. The illegality of this conversion is not enough for some California leaders who now seek to ban the popular handguns outright.
California AB 1127 attempts to reclassify Glocks as a “machinegun-convertible pistol.” This sleight of hand is an increasingly common tactic by anti-gunners to infringe on the right to keep and bear arms.
Never mind the current prohibition on converting these handguns into fully automatic weapons. Gun rights opponents such as Everytown for Gun Safety believe that such weapons need a complete overhaul.
Gun Rights Advocates Alarmed by AB 1127’s Overreach
Everytown Director for Public Policy Krystal Lopilato told a committee hearing that the goal is to force Glock to redesign its products.
“Ultimately, we need the manufacturers of these easily convertible pistols to act responsibly and change their design, and they shouldn’t be allowed to sell in California until they do so.”
Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel (D) wrote the proposal and released a statement calling AB 1127 a “common-sense bill.”
“The firearm industry has known for decades about a vulnerability in some designs rendering them readily convertible into automatic weapons,” Gabriel claimed. “This bill is focused on the industry’s lack of action to prevent conversion and will ensure we are doing everything we possibly can to protect our communities from mass shootings.”
