No less an authority than the National Rifle Association (NRA) blasted St. Paul’s shameless groveling this week to its powerful anti-Second Amendment faction.
The gun rights organization described the city’s actions as “performative,” and indeed, the mayor and council embarrassed themselves with a shameless performance.
City leaders are busy grandstanding, not governing
Despite Minnesota’s preemption law banning localities from enacting harsher gun control than the Legislature’s, St. Paul charged ahead with its latest folly.
On Wednesday, the city council introduced a blanket ban on so-called “assault weapons” and standard capacity magazines within the city’s confines. This utterly toothless action is pure political theater and has zero chance of being enforced without a significant overhaul of state law.
This controversial and doomed act followed the failed attempt by embattled Gov. Tim Walz (D) to convene a special legislative session to suppress gun rights.
St. Paul leaders may openly defy Minnesota’s preemption law
Only, Second Amendment supporters did not play along.
With hopes for a special session to obliterate the right to keep and bear arms shot down, St. Paul officials proceeded to throw a hissy fit. They know quite well that they are well outside of their legal authority in banning popular sporting rifles.
The whole city council is expected to take up the proposal next week, and unless cooler heads prevail, they will draw battle lines against the state. Gun rights supporters recognize grandstanding when they see it, and St. Paul has no chance of getting its way on banning firearms.
Besides the prohibition of semi-automatic rifles, lawmakers will also take up a ban on gun magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds.
Even the staunchest Second Amendment opponents must realize that the law will not go into effect and is purely symbolic. If window dressing is what the city council wants, then they should succeed beyond their wildest expectations.
