Make no mistake, Hawaii’s state government is heavily stacked with opponents of gun rights, and there are powerful legal actions against this regime winding through the court systems.
But even the Aloha State found several anti-Second Amendment proposals too much for it to stomach.
As the National Rifle Association (NRA) noted, the Legislature adjourned sine die for 2026 on Friday, and left for the maintenance staff to pick up were many possible infringements on the right to keep and bear arms.

HB2062 was an effort to reroute taxpayer dollars to fund an anti-gun crusade disguised as a “public awareness campaign.” This concerned the state’s contentious “red flag” laws, which were the subject of other rejected bills.
In addition, SB2517 would have expanded Hawaii’s already controversial “Gun Violence Protection Orders” (GVPO) that many times shred due process rights that the target should absolutely retain.

Yet another idea that landed in the trash wanted to elevate firearm infractions committed while subjected to a GVPO from a misdemeanor to a Class C Felony.
That’s right, proponents wanted to further eradicate due process.
Then there’s the absurd. SB2503 sought to fund at least two “buyback” events in each county of the Aloha State. These are feel-good spectacles that do less than nothing to enhance public safety while demonizing the Second Amendment.
Others wanted to mandate that restaurants and businesses post “color-coded placards” indicating whether they permit firearms or large knives on their premises.
Make no mistake, Hawaii remains one of the most hostile states in the Union to gun rights. But victories must be recognized, and apparently, there are lines that even seasoned anti-gunners hesitate to cross.
Waiting in the wings are strong legal challenges to the island state’s anti-gun apparatus. Stay tuned.
