Anti-Gunners Push for Background Checks for Gun Barrel Purchases in California

No matter how embarrassingly obvious their tricks are to eradicate the Second Amendment, anti-gunners appear incapable of experiencing shame.

That goes double for California lawmakers.

State Sen. Jesse Arreguin (D) is the sponsor of Senate Bill 704. His brainchild is an attempt to require a background check for the purchase of basic gun parts, such as barrels, whether they are intended to replace an old version or as an aftermarket upgrade on the original product.

This ridiculous effort at yet more gun control in California would take effect on July 1, 2026, if approved. Besides mandating that the licensed firearm dealer conduct a criminal background check on the potential purchaser, the sale or transfer would have to be conducted in person.

This means no more mail-order gun barrels for reasons that are impossible to justify. What purpose does this misguided legislation serve other than to create another impediment between law-abiding citizens and the free exercise of their Second Amendment rights?

Gun rights supporters recognize this brazen overreach for precisely what it is. Anti-gunners, under the guise of combating so-called “ghost guns,” now seek total control over aftermarket parts.

The National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) expressed what the sport shooting community knows. Opponents of the right to keep and bear arms seek a blanket ban on internet sales of weapons parts.

The group posted on X, “We have warned that this was always the end goal. Target the secondary market—driving up the cost of repairing and maintaining firearms in an effort to win through attrition. The ultimate objective is a complete ban on online sales.”

Gun rights opponents first sought to demonize the firearm parts market through incendiary terms such as “ghost guns.” Now they want to bring it into their iron grasp to force it out of existence.
