It is still possible, even in 2025, to be stunned by the utter cruelty that people can inflict on one another.
An armed Good Samaritan in Tennessee was unable to save a Soddy Daisy woman’s life when a suspect allegedly doused her with gasoline and set her on fire. He was, however, successful in holding the man for the police and preventing further harm to anyone else.
The shocking crime was isolated to one victim by an armed neighbor
It was Tuesday afternoon when residents called emergency services about an injured woman and a camper that was set ablaze. Upon arrival, first responders found the severely injured female down in the driveway being tended to by a neighbor.
That same person covered her with a blanket as her clothes were burned off, and he managed to hold the suspect at gunpoint.
The unidentified victim suffered third-degree burns over 70 percent of her body, and despite being rushed by helicopter to a Nashville hospital for treatment, she later succumbed to her horrific injuries.
Apparently deranged suspect was held at bay until police arrived
Before she died, the woman told authorities that “Chris” poured gas on her and set her on fire. The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Christopher Alan Medula.
When the armed witness rushed to the scene, he found the suspect spouting gibberish. Medula allegedly declared, “I had to do it; she was poisoning the world,” and then claimed to be Jesus Christ.
The suspect is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated arson. Hamilton County officials confirmed that the suspect and victim were unrelated.
The circumstances of the deadly incident strongly point toward a mental breakdown, and there could have been further casualties without the armed neighbor valiantly interceding. His loaded firearm held the suspect at bay and very well may have saved lives.
