A Houston man who was asked to defend a woman from her ex-boyfriend stepped up last week and quite possibly saved her life. And it was his free exercise of his Second Amendment rights that forcefully ended the violent attack.
The confrontation unfolded just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday after the woman reportedly had argued with her ex earlier in the day. As he was returning to the home to gather his belongings, the worried ex-girlfriend asked a male friend to be there in case trouble started.
That was a good move.
A trip to pick up personal belongings quickly became a violent encounter
The woman and her friend told investigators that her ex-boyfriend attacked her when he arrived. As her friend tried to stop the assault, the alleged attacker turned his attention to him.
The male friend was able to get away from the ex, and he went to his truck and retrieved a firearm. When his order to the ex-boyfriend to stop attacking the victim went unheeded, the friend fired multiple rounds.
The unidentified 52-year-old suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
It has not been determined whether the armed defender will face charges, though it doesn’t seem likely
Two children were upstairs when the violent incident exploded, and they slept right through it.
Meanwhile, the 50-year-old man who defended his friend left the home only to be picked up later. Investigators questioned him, and he provided a statement; no charges were initially filed against him.
Findings will be presented to the Harris County Grand Jury for possible prosecution, though that is unlikely. A Houston PD Lieutenant described the evidence captured on the doorbell video as “brutal,” and Texas law certainly favors self-defense over coddling criminals who attack defenseless victims.
