The need for situational awareness is obvious when at an ATM at night or perhaps at a gas station. That protocol now applies to storage buildings in the early morning hours, as a 67-year-old Illinois man had demonstrated to him the hard way earlier this month.

Fortunately for the senior citizen, he is a concealed carry permit holder and was armed and ready.

An alarming encounter quickly became potentially lethal as shots rang out in the storage building

Decatur Police Department investigators quickly identified the suspect as 48-year-old Telly C. Young. He allegedly approached the older man while he was in the building attempting to repair a lawnmower.

Young reportedly declared, “I own this building, where is my sister?” At the same time, he pointed a handgun at the intended victim and began firing.

Authorities believe he fired three or four rounds at the man working on the lawnmower, but none found their mark. The victim then produced his own pistol and fired an equal number of shots back at Young, striking him twice.

Intended victim quickly flipped the script on his alleged attacker

Now wounded in the right pectoral area and right bicep, the suspect continued to hold a .380 semi-automatic pistol. Police later determined that the gun jammed, and the victim ordered Young to toss it away from his reach.

The suspect was hospitalized for six days before being booked into the Macon County Jail. Preliminary charges include violation of parole or mandatory supervised release, aggravated unlawful use of a handgun, armed habitual criminal, and other charges.

As could be expected, authorities declined to file charges against the man who defended himself from the alleged attack.

Whether the incident was an attempted robbery or yet another example of mental health issues running rampant, it serves as a warning for law-abiding citizens to remain alert and ready to defend themselves in an instant.

There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.

Defend America is more than a name, it’s a stand for freedom, resilience, and the values this country was built on. Every tee, hat, and mug is a symbol of unapologetic pride. Wear it loud, wear it proud, and let the world know: freedom isn’t negotiable.
