There is little more terrifying than knowing that a defenseless person is under attack. When that person is a woman allegedly targeted by a violent criminal, it is even more disconcerting.
That’s where the Second Amendment comes in.
For the very young, the very old, and those less able to physically defend themselves, the presence of a loaded firearm and the will to use it may be the difference between life and death. It apparently was for one Indiana woman early Sunday evening.
An invited visitor apparently tried to take things too far
Officers with the Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the residence just before 7 p.m. on reports of a disturbance. They were told that a firearm was possibly involved.
When they arrived, the adult female intended victim was waiting outside the home.
She told officers that she was attacked while inside by an acquaintance who was invited over. The visitor allegedly made several unwanted advances on the woman, followed her into another room, and attacked her.
Once again, the Second Amendment comes through for a person under senseless attack
To her credit, she was able to get away from her alleged assailant long enough to grab a weapon and fire one shot. First responders rendered aid, and the suspect was transported to an Indianapolis hospital in critical condition.
He did not survive.
The woman who valiantly defended herself was treated for injuries sustained in the attack. Officials note that she cooperated with investigators, and the physical evidence matched her description of events.
Undoubtedly, she is shaken over being assaulted and being forced to resort to deadly force. However, no charges were immediately filed against her, and none are likely to be on the horizon.
It is a testament to her courage that she survived the frightening incident. It is also yet another testimonial to the Second Amendment’s ability to empower citizens to stand their ground.
