Armed Store Owner Shoots Teen Suspect in Attempted Robbery

It is an unfortunate reality that convenience stores rank high on the list of potential targets for criminals looking for an easy payday. But one New York store owner proved early Tuesday morning that his establishment was far from easy prey—especially for a repeat offender.

According to law enforcement reports, a 17-year-old male suspect entered the store located in the town of Greece, just outside Rochester, New York, around 4 a.m. The teen was wearing a mask and brandishing a firearm, allegedly intent on robbing the store.

What the young suspect didn’t expect was that the store owner, who was behind the counter, was a licensed pistol permit holder. Acting swiftly, the business owner drew his legally owned firearm and opened fire, striking the suspect in the leg.

Authorities say the teenager also fired his weapon, but none of his shots struck the owner or anyone else in the store. After being hit, the suspect reportedly fled the store on foot, only to be located nearby by responding officers.

Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies were the first on the scene. One deputy quickly applied a tourniquet to the suspect’s injured leg while awaiting emergency medical personnel. The teen was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital where he underwent surgery. As of the latest reports, he remains hospitalized and in stable condition.

Suspect Previously Robbed Same Store, Officials Say

Investigators were shocked to learn that this was not the teen’s first time attempting to rob the same store. Evidence gathered from the scene and surveillance footage suggests the suspect had previously robbed the establishment just a month earlier. While he got away the first time, this second attempt proved to be a critical miscalculation.

Deputy Chief Naser Zenelovic of the Greece Police Department commended the store owner for his quick thinking and courage in the face of danger. “He used a legally registered handgun in what appears to be the defense of himself and the store,” Zenelovic told reporters. “This is a situation where the store owner’s preparedness and ability to defend himself likely prevented serious harm or even death.”

The firearm used by the teen was recovered from inside the store and is now being processed as evidence. Authorities have not yet disclosed how the teenager came into possession of the weapon, but charges related to illegal firearm possession are expected to be added to the list of offenses.

The business owner, although clearly shaken, declined to give a public statement. He informed media outlets that he would not be speaking until he had spoken with his attorney. However, investigators reviewing the store’s surveillance footage noted that the video evidence appeared to back up the owner’s account of the incident.

As of now, it appears unlikely that the store owner will face any criminal charges. New York State law allows individuals to use deadly physical force in defense of themselves or others when there is a reasonable belief that they are in imminent danger of being seriously harmed or killed.

This incident serves as a powerful reminder of why many citizens across the country value their Second Amendment rights. In this case, a law-abiding business owner was able to defend himself, his property, and potentially his life, thanks to being legally armed and trained to respond under pressure.

While the investigation remains ongoing, one thing is clear: This store was not an easy target—and the owner was not about to become another victim.
