Imagine waking in the dead of night to the unmistakable sound of shattering glass and knowing that a bad person is probably already in your home. How long will it be before authorities arrive, and will they be in time to save your life or just ask questions and fill out a report?
Now, imagine not having a ready firearm in this scenario.
A man in Somerset Township, Pennsylvania, is well aware today of the enormous impact of the Second Amendment on a law-abiding citizen. He had the misfortune Monday morning to hear that window breaking but the foresight to be prepared.
Even when warned, the suspect allegedly continued to force his way inside
According to Pennsylvania State Police investigators, the unidentified intended victim was awakened by “loud banging” at around 2 a.m. He immediately grabbed a firearm and declared that he was armed and ready.
The suspect continued to try to force his way inside the residence, and the homeowner fired. The bullet struck the alleged intruder in the head, and responding officers found his body near the structure’s back door.
Authorities believe homeowner’s defensive actions were justified
Police detained the homeowner and transported him to the State Police barracks in Somerset for questioning, and the preliminary investigation indicated that it was an act of self-defense. And while he undoubtedly was traumatized by the violent encounter, he is alive today and was apparently uninjured.
Gun rights supporters are correct.
While the Second Amendment enables fine traditions of hunting and sportsmanship to be passed down through generations, that is not its core function.
The Founding Fathers bequeathed to future Americans the freedom to protect life and property—with lethal force if necessary. Violent criminals do not get a free pass, and as the suspect in Pennsylvania learned, the good people are not defenseless.
