At Long Last: Louisiana Frog Hunters May Now Carry Firearms at Night

Of all the things that Americans may be restricted from, being prohibited from carrying a gun while frogging at night in Louisiana is not one that jumps out as most oppressive.

However, until August first, the good citizens of the Bayou State could not carry a rifle, shotgun, or other weapon while enjoying their favorite pastime after sunset.

Thankfully, the long dark night of fascism finally ended on August 1.

Frog hunters have a constitutional right to self-defense—just like all law-abiding citizens

Much credit goes to state Sen. Eddie Lambert (R), who championed Act 109. The lawmaker is quick to note that his constituents do not hunt frogs with firearms, but there are clearly instances when having one handy is critical.

“A lot of times, you may be in a situation where you break down at night or whatever, or coming back to a boat landing,” Lambert explained. “You’re going to wish you had a gun with you if somebody wants to rob you or do something lying in wait for you.”

People could pose as nighttime frog hunters when they were illegally targeting deer

Louisiana has a 10-month bull and pig frog season, except for April and May’s breeding period.

Lambert admitted that catching frogs “is one of my favorite activities.” He is well known for taking visitors on excursions to hunt the hoppers from his vacation cottage.

The offending law banning frog hunters from being armed at night was put on the books in 1992. Motivated by instances of people who illegally deer hunt at night, supporters argued that people caught in this activity would simply claim to be frog hunters.

Either way, another segment of the population is now assured of their Second Amendment rights.
