There is a distinctive gray area in cases of self-defense where the intended victim is not under an immediate violent threat. Unfortunately for the good people, these incidents unfold so quickly that it may be challenging to determine just how much danger a person is in.
Take the case of an Atlanta man who received an outpouring of support on social media after being arrested by authorities.
Homeowner reacted to allegedly seeing his property taken from his front porch
Atlanta police investigators believe 34-year-old Rakim Bradford responded to two teenagers who attempted to steal packages from his porch in southwest Atlanta.
It was Thursday afternoon when officers found a 15-year-old with a gunshot wound to the foot. He was transported to a nearby hospital and should fully recover from his injury.
The outcome was not so favorable for a second teen who was shot in the right arm. He was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery.
He is expected to survive.
Obvious cases of self-defense are not so evident in some cities
As for Bradford, he is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum confirmed that packages were taken off the front porch.
Then he gave an interesting statement.
“Anytime a child is injured in our city, we take that very seriously,” Schierbaum declared. “We want to make sure we know what happened, that individuals are held accountable, and that the proper resources are available for that family.”
There was no word on possible charges faced by the two suspects who allegedly stole from the homeowner’s front porch.
As always, it is critical to be aware of laws and regulations where you are. While Georgia is generally friendly to self-defense and gun rights, the same cannot be said for Atlanta.
