Never let the facts get in the way of a good story is how an adage goes. The same can be said for political proclamations, as the facts have nothing to do with grandstanding.
That hard lesson was driven home on Tuesday by Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott (D), who took to CNN’s airwaves to make a misguided plea to the White House.
Mayor: Law-abiding Americans should not be able to purchase semi-automatic rifles
Appearing on The Lead With Jake Tapper, Scott presented an amazingly simplistic roadmap for curing his city’s spiraling crime rate. “The president could also do some very simple things for us, Jake. Not just for Baltimore, but for the whole country.”
The mayor then proclaimed that no American should be able to walk into a store and purchase a semi-automatic rifle. But would this truly make anyone safer?
Numbers simply do not support Scott’s demand
The answer is a hard no, according to the National Association for Gun Rights. (NAGR). The group posted facts on X to show how ridiculous the mayor’s suggestion truly was.
For example, in 2019, Maryland only had three murders in which the perpetrator used a rifle OF ANY KIND. Three. That’s 0.05% of the state’s homicides, and this includes deer rifles, .22s, shotguns, and every long gun, including the dreaded AR-15.
NAGR said it best. “Going after rifles has nothing to do with ‘safety’ or ‘fighting crime.’
In fact, more people in recent years have been killed with knives and even bare hands and feet than with rifles in the U.S.
These are facts, and the mayor was certainly not dealing with facts when he called for the prohibition of tens of millions of popular sporting rifles. If Scott were truly serious about public safety, he would take genuine corrective steps to keep violent criminals off the streets and protect his citizens.
Instead, he resorted to grandstanding.
