Resident left with no choice but to fight back against alleged intruder
The caller told emergency services that he was armed and ready to defend himself if the suspect gained entry. He stayed on the phone with 911, telling them of the suspect’s actions.
Riverside County Sheriff’s Department officers were dispatched to the location but were not in time to prevent what came next.
According to the sheriff’s department, “the suspect eventually forced his way into the residence and was shot by the homeowner.” Faced with no other choice, the citizen fired at least one shot, killing the unwelcome guest.
Responding paramedics attempted life-saving measures on the suspect, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Charges against the homeowner, even in California, are doubtful
By all accounts, the resident is cooperating with the investigation. He was taken to the Lake Matthews Sheriff’s Station for questioning, and it will ultimately be up to prosecutors to determine whether charges will be filed.
That is very unlikely.
There is no indication that the homeowner did anything but properly defend himself and his property from the intruder, later identified as 25-year-old Paul Hunter.
