If the virulent anti-Second Amendment crowd is anything, it’s ironic.
Take California. The Golden State rolls out the red carpet for drug users as cities become open-air opium dens and are filled with recreational users. But, at the same time, lawmakers push for the federal government to continue to restrict 2A rights from even the occasional marijuana consumer.
The issue begs for a U.S. Supreme Court resolution, and that is apparently coming. Especially with the announcement of dramatic changes to federal marijuana policy.
The 2A community is firmly opposed to anyone under the influence handling weapons
In U.S. v. Hemani, the high court will take up a strong challenge to federal laws barring pot smokers from possessing weapons—even while sober.
No one in the Second Amendment community wants to mix firearms with drugs and alcohol, and every upstanding gun owner knows this. However, states such as California that believe they are all about individual rights are violently opposed to gun rights for drug users.
The Bonta-led AGs made an incredible claim that is impossible to ignore
Attorney General Rob Bonta (D) and his colleagues from 20 other states filed an amicus brief before the Supreme Court. Of course, they supported the government’s tired argument that pot smokers should not enjoy gun rights even when they do not imbibe.
“Both red and blue states alike—recognizing the dangers posed by combining habitual drug use with firearms—have imposed firearm restrictions to prevent gun violence,” Bonta claimed. “Today, I urge the Supreme Court to reverse a lower court decision, uphold public safety, and keep firearms out of the reach of people who are drug users.”
Bonta acknowledged that a lower court already ruled the federal restriction unconstitutional. And as he presented the states’ case, the logic went entirely off the rails.
Incredibly, the AGs argued that somehow, marijuana users are more dangerous when high than those who are drunk on alcohol.
Anyone with five minutes of life experience knows this is not true.
