With the completely arbitrary drop-dead date of March 31 looming for Canada’s owners of banned firearms, officials are not even trying to hide the next step in the confiscation scheme.
A tense exchange between Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree and House of Commons member Dane Lloyd this week encapsulated the exploding controversy.
Very few Canadians fall in line with the controversial program
According to a video posted by Rebel News, Lloyd cited the minuscule numbers of citizens complying with the program. Then he asked what the government’s plan is in the wake of only 2.5% of affected gun owners rejecting handing over their weapons.
Anandasangaree contested the data and then confirmed what many already believed.
“The plan we have is, as of March 31, the time to complete the enrollment will be done,” the minister revealed. “And then, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and other agencies will be available throughout the spring and summer to do the collection.”
Many local governments rejected participating in gun confiscation
Anandasangaree insisted that the massive door-to-door campaign would not strain already thin law enforcement resources. He claimed that off-duty and retired officers could carry out the confiscation.
Lloyd then noted that many localities are refusing to be part of the scheme. “Minister, I just find that very concerning that we are going to send police officers door-to-door because, frankly, many police forces across the country are refusing to participate in your program.”
Officials must be embarrassed by the paltry response to the “buyback.” According to the National Rifle Association (NRA), the government is spending a staggering $25,000 per confiscated weapon, and that’s not all.
Who are the few Canadians handing over their banned firearms to authorities? Law-abiding citizens. This means the effect on public safety is minimal, if any.
