Canada’s anti-gun forces should be throwing up their hands in defeat as their insidious firearm confiscation effort continues to go down in flames. Even with a cherry-picked location for a strongly supported pilot program, the results can only be read as an abject failure.
Officials quietly kicked the can down the road again last week by extending the gun amnesty for another year. It was set to expire at the end of October and had been nearly universally ignored by the shooting public.
The government decided to operate a pilot project in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The results were laughable.
Officials did everything in their power to ensure success with the pilot program
First, the National Rifle Association (NRA) noted that this location was hardly chosen randomly. The Regional Police Chief was one of the few prominent law enforcement officials to support the confiscation.
It happens that his brother-in-law is an MP who is a staunch proponent of firearm seizures. In other words, the site was handpicked for the highest possible success rate.
So, how did this trial run at confiscation work out?
The shooting public simply will not voluntarily surrender their firearms to the Canadian government
Officials estimated that they would see up to 200 firearms surrendered by the docile public over the two-week period. In fact, they optimistically set that number as a hard limit for how many they would accept.
In their minds, they must have imagined hundreds of sportsmen and women lining up at their doors to hand over heirlooms that have been in their families for generations. They saw firearms used for self-defense and to put food on the table surrendered without a peep of protest.
The final tally of weapons handed in to Canadian officials was estimated by the Canadian Shooting Sports Association (CSSA) at fewer than 30. This pilot project was to demonstrate to organizers how the confiscation would roll out nationwide.
If that’s the case, anti-gunners need to go back to the drawing board and stop delaying their failure for another year.
