Walking down a Chicago street after 4 a.m. does not seem to be the brightest idea, but in the most recent case the circumstances are unclear. Perhaps the pedestrian was going to or returning home from work.

Either way, it was around 4:20 a.m. Tuesday morning when a lone man encountered a world of unexpected trouble as he strolled along the city’s north side. Two vehicles, a white sedan and a dark SUV, converged in front of him and an armed suspect exited one of them.

According to reports, the assailant demanded the 23-year-old intended victim empty his pockets and hand over everything he had. What he had, however, may have saved his life.

The walker was also a concealed carry permit holder, and he had the good sense to be properly armed for his early morning jaunt. He fired several times at the armed suspect, and the alleged robber then fired back.

No one was reported struck by the exchange of bullets, and the suspect reentered his vehicle and fled.

The armed pedestrian was both courageous and fortunate as Chicago Police believe he encountered a violent crew that had already struck several targets in the Windy City.

Less than an hour earlier, two men drew weapons and robbed a man who was sitting in his car. They fled in a silver SUV.

Roughly 20 minutes later a pair of cars stopped near a woman’s vehicle, opened her car door and yanked her purse from her hands.

It was just minutes later when another victim entered a local police station to tell authorities that he was robbed by a group of men who approached him in two vehicles.

And police are gathering details of even more incidents in the area Tuesday morning.

As for the armed early morning walker, he was able to avoid becoming yet another victim. And local law enforcement continues to look for a batch of criminals who may be more wary before choosing their next mark.
