A South Chicago teen rapper is recovering after being shot during an alleged robbery attempt. His mistake? Apparently targeting a woman who, instead of being just another helpless victim of violent crime, was revealed to be legally armed and ready to defend herself.
That was bad news for 17-year-old Kamari Bonslater, who is better known by his rap name, “4 Block Lil Mari.” He reportedly has “Murda” tattooed on his neck and was already on pre-trial release for another infraction.
Pack of armed criminals allegedly targeted pair in a parked car
The recent attack was initially reported to law enforcement as a drive-by shooting. Good detective work quickly unraveled the false narrative and led directly to the wounded suspect.
Police believe Bonslater and a group of accomplices approached a parked vehicle occupied by the 34-year-old female target and her 31-year-old friend. Prosecutors alleged the youthful rapper pointed a firearm at the intended victims and attempted to pull open the passenger door.
Bad move.
Without the presence of a loaded handgun, the encounter would have ended very differently
Witnesses reported that Bonslater fired first, striking the female in the leg. She responded with a hail of bullets, hitting her assailant several times before she drove away.
The performer’s accomplices fired helplessly at her vehicle as she left them behind. Surveillance video revealed to investigators that the group dragged Bonslater into an alley after he fell to the ground.
The rapper now faces charges that include attempted second-degree murder, attempted vehicular hijacking, and aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm.
Because of his existing legal entanglement, Bonslater is being held without bail by order of a Cook County judge. According to cwbchicago.com, this case marks the 20th time this year that an individual in Chicago on pre-trial release was charged with killing or attempting to kill another person.
