Colorado lawmakers may be late for the anti-Second Amendment party, but they are doing their best to make up for lost time with wave after wave of gun control bills.
Anti-gun Gov. Jared Polis (D) signed House Bill 24-1174 last year, and it went into effect on July 1. In order for an individual to acquire a concealed handgun permit (CHP), they must now navigate a treacherous and unnecessary series of obstacles.
Each applicant must undergo eight hours of live classroom training, pass an exam with a mark of at least 80%, and complete a live-fire exercise during which 50 rounds are fired with at least 70% accuracy.
Anti-gun lawmakers rushed through a bill without considering its feasibility
The repercussions started long before the slew of new restrictions took hold.
Law enforcement officials reported long lines and people being turned away in June as they rushed to submit applications before the July 1 changes. One county reported a 324% spike in applications compared to just one year ago.
With the surge of citizens seeking their CHP came another issue—too few instructors in Colorado.

Kirk Evans of U.S. LawShield revealed that there are only approximately 190 verified renewal course instructors to serve the western state’s 63 counties. Furthermore, many of these localities lack such an instructor, creating yet another obstacle to lawful concealed carry.
For clarity, the state has some 650,000 permit holders, meaning roughly 132,000 must renew their qualification every year. That breaks down to approximately 700 license renewals per instructor.
And some of the courses cost as much as $200. Is it any wonder that so many in the sporting public, as well as law enforcement, are frustrated with the quagmire that Colorado officials created?
