A longstanding and egregious Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) policy targeting the gun rights of those who served the highest calling was stripped last week from a new federal spending bill.

Under present policy, the VA sends the names of veterans who are unable to manage their financial benefits to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

Aidan Johnston of Gun Owners of America (GOA) told Fox News Digital that the VA practice violates the hard-won freedoms of the nation’s veterans.

“The VA is acting totally unconstitutional[ly] in this veteran de-armament process. This is illegal, unconstitutional and should have never been done.”

Aidan added that due process was not followed in stripping away gun rights. “These are not adjudicated cases. These are not insane veterans. These are people who had trouble with their health or might need someone to manage their finances.”

The GOA said that as many as 250,000 military veterans were already disarmed due to the misguided policy.

Though many riders attached to the massive spending bill were stripped by the Senate, the measures protecting gun rights for veterans remained in the final version.

The bill would prohibit the VA from reporting veterans who were found mentally incapable of managing their financial affairs to the background check system.

After all, it is a far cry from an elderly person being unable to manage a checkbook to telling a veteran they may not be armed to defend themselves. The policy, which amazingly existed for decades, drew criticism for implementing a sweeping definition of incompetence.

The change is certainly positive for the nation’s veterans.

Now, with the president’s expected signature, the VA will be required to obtain a court order declaring a veteran poses a danger to themselves or others before they are entered into the system and denied their gun rights.
