North Carolina’s large shooting community continues to be teased by the possibility of constitutional carry. Unfortunately, the latest scheduled veto override vote was postponed yet again on Monday.
Senate Bill 50, or the Freedom to Carry NC Act, sailed through the Senate in July as the upper chamber overrode Gov. Roy Cooper’s (D) controversial veto.
However, the bill needs to clear the House with a three-fifths majority of those present and voting for a successful veto override, and that has not happened. The margin for gun rights supporters is razor-thin, and they did not believe they were ready for a vote on Monday.
The vote was already delayed once.
2A groups urge supporters to keep up the pressure on representatives
The long-overdue bill would establish the rights of law-abiding citizens to carry a concealed firearm for self-defense without crawling to the government for permission.
Second Amendment supporters, such as the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR), urge residents to contact their representatives and encourage them to implement constitutional carry. The group singled out seven key representatives who could make a difference when the vote finally comes about in Raleigh.
NRA issued warning about S50—even if it becomes law
The National Rifle Association (NRA), the nation’s oldest and largest gun rights group, is also a strong supporter of North Carolina becoming the 30th constitutional carry state. That endorsement comes with a caveat, however, as the organization warned that S50 is far from perfect.
In a statement, the NRA cautioned that there remains work to be done if the veto is overridden.
“S50, as written, creates scenarios in which a person could lawfully purchase and possess a firearm but would still be prohibited from carrying that firearm for self-defense purposes.” While the NRA believes tossing the veto is a step in the right direction, it will not create true constitutional carry in North Carolina.
