Delivery drivers are as ubiquitous in 2026 as Blockbuster locations were in the 80s and 90s. Unfortunately, the nature of the business makes it highly likely that these gig workers will encounter someone who does not have their best interests at heart.
For a 28-year-old DoorDash driver and his girlfriend in Ohio, having a loaded weapon may have saved their lives.
Roadway encounter quickly turned deadly when shots were fired
Emergency services in Akron received calls from both drivers in the frightening encounter. Investigators believe an unidentified 17-year-old began tailgating the delivery person and driving aggressively.
When the DoorDash driver tried to defuse the encounter by pulling over and letting the other car pass, police believe shots were fired into the delivery vehicle.
The intended victim returned fire after rounds struck his vehicle, and one hit the 17-year-old driver in the head. He was rushed to an area hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
DoorDash driver and girlfriend were unharmed in the attack
Investigators later determined that his 15-year-old brother in the alleged aggressor’s vehicle fired the first shot from the passenger’s side. He reportedly admitted to officers that he shot first and later disposed of the weapon.
The suspect was initially charged with felonious assault, tampering with evidence, and motor vehicle theft. The vehicle the two teenagers were in was stolen.
The DoorDash driver immediately went to a nearby convenience store to wait for authorities. According to reports, he is cooperating with law enforcement and appears to legally own the weapon he fired.
No injuries were reported to the intended victims.
Road rage can explode in a moment on virtually anyone, but professional drivers, simply by the amount of time they spend on the road, are in particular danger. There is no word on DoorDash’s response to the incident.
