What a difference a year makes!
In 2024, U.S. gun owners were subject to the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. This ill-conceived outfit was pieced together from organizations opposed to the Second Amendment and was never serious about proper crime prevention.
One year later, the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division’s new Second Amendment Section now stands for gun rights, not the eradication of constitutional protections.
It’s a new era for the formerly embattled Department of Justice
On Tuesday, the DOJ lodged a complaint against the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) over gun rights. Many charged the territory with slow-walking gun permit applications and, in general, being hostile to the right to keep and bear arms.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon declared the days of hostility to 2A rights are over.
“This Civil Rights Division will protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens,” Dhillon announced in a press release. “The newly established Second Amendment Section filed this lawsuit to bring the Virgin Islands Police Department back into legal compliance by ensuring that applicants receive timely decisions without unconstitutional obstruction.”
U.S. territories use outdated policies to deny gun rights
At issue is the territory’s stubborn adherence to the old “proper cause” protocol for gun permits.
This was once a common tactic by anti-gunners to make possessing a weapon much more difficult, but the U.S. Supreme Court tossed it aside in its landmark 2022 Bruen decision. There is no other constitutional freedom that demands a person justify their free exercise of that freedom.
Only the Second Amendment.
The fight to reestablish gun rights is far from over, but having the DOJ exercise its proper role after years of opposition to the weapons industry and the sporting public is a welcome step in the right direction.
