It takes a special kind of bad guy to target the elderly, but that, unfortunately, is the world we live in. And in Florida, there are many senior citizens to choose from, though not all are going gently into that good night.
This lesson was driven home with lethal force on Tuesday afternoon in Jacksonville when a man thought to be in his 70s encountered an alleged armed suspect who entered his residence through a rear window.
The newcomer quickly attempted to take control of the situation only to have it slide off the rails for him. That’s because the homeowner had the wisdom to have a firearm ready and the courage to use it to defend himself.
A chilling command gave the target a chance to grab a weapon, and that was all he needed
According to local media, the intruder forced the elderly man into a bedroom and ordered him to gather his valuables and car keys.
While appearing to comply, the intended victim managed to grab a loaded handgun and fired one shot at the suspect. That was all it took to convince the alleged intruder that it was time to flee, and he did so in the homeowner’s car.
The wounded suspect did not make it far
It did not take the authorities long to track down the bleeding suspect in the stolen car, and he was transported to an area hospital for treatment of his gunshot wound.
A witness told First Coast News that it was a wild scene when law enforcement closed in on the unidentified alleged attacker.
“Everyone had their tasers drawn,” Brandon Meredith recalled. “They’re moving up in a special kind of formation on the back of the car, heard a pop, they grabbed him and pulled him out, put him on the ground, and EMS was tending to him, and they had the intersection shut down for about two hours while this whole thing unfolded.”
The suspect is expected to recover and faces numerous charges. No injuries were reported to the courageous homeowner.
