The Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) lawsuit against New York State over its denial of carry rights to non-residents has been settled, and it is a victory for the good guys.
Last week, the advocacy group announced that Empire State officials agreed to change their controversial policy. The organization said in its filing in Shaffer v. Quattrone that citizens “do not surrender their Second Amendment-protected rights when they travel outside their home state.”
Momentum is building for expanding carry rights nationwide
FPC President Brandon Combs celebrated the win over New York’s gun control regime.
This is a great development in our ongoing efforts to restore the right to bear arms throughout the United States,” Combs declared following the settlement. “New York is the third state in a row, following our wins in California and Louisiana, where we’ve eliminated carry bans on non-residents and shown that rights do not stop at state borders.”
Combs added that the effort is far from over, as millions more law-abiding Americans deserve the ability to freely exercise their Second Amendment rights.
FPC pledges to monitor New York officials and the issuance of carry permits
The settlement means that in-state residency or employment is no longer mandated for applying for a permit to carry. This change was confirmed on the New York State website.
The FPC sued Chautauqua County, Steuben County, Tioga County, and Orange County over their refusal to accept non-resident applications.
The group took it a step further, establishing a website where New Yorkers can report violations of the settlement. After all, it is one thing to reach an agreement with anti-gunners and another to see them follow through with their commitments.
Combs urged “anyone who wants to carry in New York” to step up and apply. If they feel the state illegally denied their application, they may report the details to firearmspolicy.org/ny-carry-hotline.
