Even as the Department of Justice (DOJ) and several states strengthen their commitments to Second Amendment rights, there is a troubling trend in major cities nationwide.
Voters are sending leaders into office who are radically opposed to gun rights, almost certainly setting up a new round of protracted legal battles.
Gun Owners of America (GOA) last week sounded the alarm over Miami electing Eileen Higgins (D) as the city’s next mayor. Unfortunately, the vote aligned them with New York City and Seattle as metropolitan areas that turned their fortunes over to gun rights opponents.
Incoming Miami mayor criticized for soft-on-crime policies
In a news release, GOA lamented Higgins’s track record of coddling criminals and suppressing 2A freedoms. The longtime Moms Demand Action volunteer has a proven track record, though it is not one to boast about.
“During her tenure on the Miami-Dade County Commission, Higgins supported cashless bail policies promoted by anti-gun activists nationwide, where cashless bail has been linked to repeat offenses, increased law enforcement strain, and public safety concerns,” the statement warned.
Miami adds to the recent trend of major cities electing anti-gun mayors
The GOA release further cautioned that Miami will undoubtedly join other cities that recently rejected fundamental rights: “She joins other prominent anti-gun mayors, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D), Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D), and Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson (D), who have promoted similar policies of limiting the law-abiding public from exercising their Second Amendment rights while prioritizing violent criminal offenders via soft-on-crime policies.”
If there is a saving grace to the election result, it is that Florida’s preemption law will limit Higgins. She will be unable to push through local gun control legislation that is more stringent than that imposed by the state.
Still, it is a sign of the times that more legal skirmishes must be waged to protect gun rights in South Florida.
