Gov. Hochul Declares Intent to Eradicate ‘Ghost Guns’

As states that are bastions of Second Amendment opponents compete to see who can infringe on gun rights the most, New York may be taking the lead.

In 2025, the anti-gun Everytown group hosted a gathering in New York City to create panic over the “scourge” of 3D-printed weapons flooding the streets. Of course, there is no such emergency, but that did not stop the attendees from issuing proclamations of doom and gloom.

Now comes word in 2026 that Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) is again on the warpath against the Second Amendment. This time, it’s through a crackdown on the craft of producing hobby weapons, particularly through modern technology.

Anti-2A forces believe ‘ghost guns’ are flooding city streets

The governor told reporters in a statement that her actions would make New Yorkers safer. “From the iron pipeline to the plastic pipeline, these proposals will keep illegal ghost guns off New York streets and enhance measures to track and block the production of dangerous and illegal firearms in our state.”

If Hochul’s groundbreaking proposals become law, they will be some of the first in the U.S. to go after the ideas and plans for these weapons.

NY lawmakers seek unparalleled restrictions on hobby weapons

It would become a crime to sell, distribute, or possess digital instructions for manufacturing 3D-printed firearms or weapons components without a government license.

Guardrails would be built into the burgeoning technology—so-called “safety standards—that would prevent these advanced printers from producing these weapons and components.

Handgun manufacturers would be required to design pistols that cannot be modified.

And police departments must report all confiscations of 3D-printed firearms for entry into the New York State Police Criminal Gun Clearinghouse database.

Besides the clear Second Amendment issues with Hochul’s anti-gun agenda, there are also significant free speech considerations to enacting such a law. It is a slippery slope for the government to prohibit specific words and ideas, and even more so when they pertain to a fundamental human right.
